What to do with Leicester City’s fringe players this summer
By Matt Taylor
Midfielders
Matty James – Sell
An essential player in Leicester’s promotion from the Championship in 2014, James’ time at the King Power has since been hampered with frequent and severe injuries.
The 27-year-old seems only a shadow of his former self, with a fresh start seemingly the most beneficial outcome for both player and club.
Nampalys Mendy – Keep for rotation
Last season saw a Leicester renaissance for the Frenchman, who was a consistent starter in Claude Puel’s 4-2-3-1 system.
With the arrival of Youri Tielemans in January, Mendy’s role was relegated to squad player. His consistency make him extremely useful for squad rotation in what should be a successful season at the King Power.
Hamza Choudhury – Push into starting XI
With an under 21 European Championship on the horizon, Choudhury ended the 2018/19 campaign in superb form. His performances, particularly against Arsenal and Chelsea, gained the City academy graduate a place in the starting XI.
However, the combination of Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison and Tielemans seems to be the preferred midfield trio for Brendan Rodgers, but the 21-year-old is on the cusp of a guaranteed spot, should his brilliant performances continue.
Adrien Silva – Sell
After the calamitous transfer saga that saw him miss the first half of the 2017/18 season, Silva failed to hit the ground running in English football.
His most useful contribution to Leicester has been his use as a makeweight in bringing Tielemans to the King Power, in a loan move that will hopefully become permanent both ways.
The slower tempo of the French Ligue 1 seems to suit Silva far more than the Premier League did.
Andy King – Sell (But build a statue)
Mr. Leicester City – three league titles won and the highest scoring midfielder ever. King is undoubtedly a Foxes legend, but at 30 years old, he deserves to be playing football.
After an injury saw his loan to Derby cut short, a fresh start would be best this summer for the Welsh international.
