What to do with Leicester City’s fringe players this summer
By Matt Taylor
Attackers and Wingers
Marc Albrighton – Keep for rotation
The ex-Aston Villa man was an integral part of City’s unforgettable Premier League title win, and has already established legendary status on Filbert Way.
Tenacious but consistent, Albrighton is arguably still good enough to start for Leicester, although a winger with more goal contributions is needed for the Foxes to seriously challenge for Europe. The 29-year-old is certainly a useful squad player at worst.
Demarai Gray – Persevere
The England Under 21 international, who will feature at this summer’s European Championships, simply needs to add consistency to his game to establish himself as a guaranteed starter for Leicester.
Although plenty of City fans have given up on the 22-year-old, there is nothing to stop Gray from beginning to fulfil his massive potential in Leicester’s first full season under Rodgers.
Fousseni Diabate – Loan again
With a silky first touch and a plethora of tricks in his arsenal, Diabate was a bargain at just £2 million in today’s transfer market. The Malian still has potential to one day feature in the first team but, in terms of his development, it would be better to loan him out once more before assessing the player’s role at the King Power Stadium.
Rachid Ghezzal – Sell
Although the 27-year-old has not been given a proper chance at Leicester, he has failed to set the world alight whenever he has taken to the pitch for the Foxes. Selling Ghezzal seems the best option for both parties.

Kelechi Iheanacho – Loan
For Iheanacho, it has been a torrid time at the King Power following his £25 million move from Manchester City. With the Nigerian’s confidence at rock bottom, it would be beneficial to loan him to a club where he would have a consistent spot in the first team.
Islam Slimani – Keep for rotation
Slimani registered an impressive 27 goals in 33 games for Sporting Lisbon the season before City signed him for a club record fee, not to mention the seven goals in all competitions that he scored in a largely underwhelming 2016-17 campaign for the Foxes.
Leicester have nothing to lose when it comes to their Algerian ‘dragon-slayer’, it is worth seeing how he fares under Rodgers.
