Leicester City supporters have been pressed to consider whether the King Power club should retain or sell legend Kasper Schmeichel. Here is what they think.

Whether we like it or not, the Great Dane will one day no longer be a player for the club, though he will always be a Fox. Schmeichel has been with Leicester for a decade, is club captain, and was vice captain long before that.

However, comments from the ‘keeper have left supporters bemused. They feel vague statements about his future after his current contract are too ambiguous, though many like the honesty. The international goalkeeper has been honest that he does not know whether he will stay or go.

So, the obvious question is what the fans think. Do they feel it is time to sell in the summer to get a little money, or keep him on and try and give the legendary keeper a new contract? This is what Foxes of Leicester asked on social media.

There were some very interesting comments, so we are going to run through some of them and try to understand where everyone is coming from, as well as providing our own opinion.

"“Keep until his contract runs down. In a squad lacking experience… winning mentality we can’t afford to let him go yet. Doubt we will get much money…” @turloLCFC"

This was a common way supporters felt. Schmeichel is not getting any younger, and the Foxes will undoubtedly require a new and well-integrated goalkeeper at some point. However, the Great Dane has experience and has won with us, it is difficult when the rest of the squad is so young to lose a leader, winner, and experienced player.

"Sell, Sell, Sell. @FoxisBlue"

There were plenty of fans who though it was time for the Danish goalkeeper to leave the club in the summer. They see him as getting older and better options available either at the club or in the market.

This is often in tandem with those who feel our No. 1 has been significantly and noticeably worse this season than in previous seasons. In the 20/21 season, Schmeichel was lauded as one of the best, yet his current statistics in terms of post-shot expected goals versus shots saved does not look too impressive anymore.

"I’d bloody love Nick Pope @maxramsell"

From Dean Henderson to Nick Pope, Daniel Iversen to Sam Johnstone, supporters have named many potential replacements from within and without the squad. Of course, Henderson would be the best of those long term, but I myself am partial towards Illan Meslier. Please click below to complete the article.

"New deal. 100%. Great keeper and great leader. Easily top-5 in the Premier League for me and still has plenty to offer @MarkPeters81"

Regardless of those upset over comments or feeling we need a change, the majority seem to agree. A new deal for Kasper ‘Great Dane’ Schmeichel. The keeper has been with us from lows to highs and has been one of the best ever in the Premier League.

He remains good enough for Leicester City, a perfect player fit for the ambitions and winning mentality of the club. The King Power side needs quality, experience, and leading players in their field, and Schmeichel is one of those.

Here is what I would say though. Let Kasper Schmeichel choose. If he wishes to go this summer, then we should given Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen the chance to prove they are the ones, if not, sign someone in the next January window.

However, should he choose to stay, offer the player a new deal with optional extension should we achieve European football more regularly. This being said, we need to start reducing the wage bill for some players so we can increase the wage budget available for other positions, so a change in wages could be useful for the side to consider.
