The Champions League group results are in! And the teams that Leicester City will join in the Champions League group are…
Tonight saw the drawing of the groups for the Champions League with Leicester City being drawn into Group G after going into the draw as the number one seeds for the Premier League after becoming the champions of England.
We all knew Leicester would be from Pot 1 but one question remained. Who did they draw and what are Leicester City’s chances of continuing into the Round of 16? Lets find out.
Pot 1: Leicester City
It was fairly obvious which team would be in Leicester City’s group from Pot 1 after the foxes conquered the Premier League last season to become champions.
With the new Champions League format, the winner of the major leagues now automatically get entered into pot 1 along with the winner of the previous Champions League, for example this year it is Real Madrid as they won it last summer under new manager and club legend Zinedine Zidane.
Leicester City look to take the competition by storm and will look to surprise many teams the way they did during their title winning season.
Teams will underestimate the fearless foxes and as such, may find themselves in trouble when playing Leicester City.
Pot 2: FC Porto
The first team to be drawn into Group G after Leicester City was FC Porto.
The historic Portuguese side finished 3rd in the Primeira Liga behind winners Benfica and Sporting CP but due to their recent performances in the Champions League they were 2nd seeds despite Sporting CP finishing above them.
Their reputation in Europe is not to be underestimated, it was with FC Porto that put Jose Mourinho on the map when he won the Champions League with them just 13 years ago.
After storming past Italian giants Roma in the qualifying stages of the competition, Porto look to be a side to fear with plenty of young talent mixed with experienced veterans.
Both Leicester City and Porto fans will be happy with this draw as the foxes have avoided powerhouses such as Dortmund and Atletico Madrid but FC Porto are by no means pushovers.
With a steady flow of young talent, FC Porto are always a team to keep an eye out and will fancy their chances of reaching the Round of 16, if they do, they’ll be considered dark horses going forward no matter who they face.
Pot 3: Club Brugge
Pot 3 saw Leicester City and FC Porto get paired with Belgian Pro League champions Club Brugge.
Like Leicester City themselves, many underestimate Club Brugge.
Last season saw the Belgian champions top their Europa League group of Torino, HJK and Copenhagen.
They made it past the Round of 16 after beating the Turkish side Beşiktaş but were ultimately knocked out in the quarter finals to Ukrianian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.
By no means the smallest club in Pot 3, Club Brugge will be happy to have avoided the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
Every coin has two sides however and Leicester City and Porto will be happy to draw Club Brugge as their third pot choice as they have now avoided clubs FC Basel, PSV and Mönchengladbach who were also in the same pot as Club Brugge.
Pot 4: F.C Copenhagen
For a second year running, F.C Copenhagen have been grouped with Club Brugge, jsut like in the 14/15 season however this time it’s on the biggest stage of all, the Champions League.
The Danish champions were the last team to be drawn into Group G, completing the group which now consists of themselves, Leicester City, FC Porto and Club Brugge.
Many will write off the Danish side after an abysmal Europa League campaign two seasons ago, where they only scraped one point off of a group consisting of Club Brugge, Torino and HJK.
However they will have a point to prove and with a win rate of 40% in the Champions League historically, they are not to be underestimated.
Although Group G may not be considered the group of death due to other groups in the competition being much higher quality respectively, however that doesn’t not mean that Group G is not a group of survival. It may come down to the fittest.
