Leicester City returned to European action during mid-week as they hosted Danish Champions FC Copenhagen in front of another excellent home crowd.

Leicester City’s English Premier League campaign continues to look in shambles as they Foxes dropped another three points over the weekend.

However, while the domestic proceedings are not going at all as planned, their European nights continue to prove successful.

A trip to Denmark once more ending in a Leicester victory as a goal from Riyad Mahrez and a worldie of a save for Kasper Schmeichel was the difference on the night for the club against Copenhagen.

Player Ratings

Kasper Schmeichel – For the most part the Dane was untested by his home county’s club, but made the save that counted at the death to keep an all important three point securing clean sheet. – 8.0

Danny Simpson – Won some important aerial battles and looked solid in his first team return and will likely keep his place for the weekend. – 7.0

Wes Morgan – An early possible injury scare was weathered and the captain put in a solid shift  – 6.5

Robert Huth – Proved his worth against Cornelius in the air all night long and made a case that he maybe has a bit more in the locker after all. – 7.5

Christian Fuchs – Not his best European night, the Austrian was solid but his clearances and distribution was still a bit shaky. – 6.5

Riyad Mahrez – Continues to look like he is working his way back to form and took his goal well. The link up between his fellow countryman in Slimani looks as though it will soon bear fruit. – 8.5

Andy King – Earned his place on the night with a tireless display of hard work in defense, and did all he could to try and support the attack. – 7.0

Danny Drinkwater – At times he was taken out of the game with Claudio Ranieri’s plan of over the top attacking, but as always was everywhere he could be to try and be part of the game. – 7.5

More from Analysis

Marc Albrighton – Looked dangerous in his deliveries and continues to show his work rate when put to the challenge. – 7.0

Jamie Vardy – A hard working display as the Englishman was a constant threat but failed to get on the score sheet. – 8.0

Islam Slimani – Was the assisting player for Mahrez and could have been on the board himself with a bit more luck. – 7.5

Claudio Ranieri got the tactics right on the day as his game plan to take the attack over the top of the FC Copenhagen high backline allowed the Foxes to keep their shape and be quick and decisive in their moves forward.

Mahrez and Slimani looked up for it and lively after their cameo’s against Chelsea at the weekend and you can tell that their Champions League campaign was a priority for the club this week.

With the way Leicester are falling down the table their only way back to European action next year could be to try and pull off another awe inspiring run to a title this year.

Now it is back to planning for the Premier League as the Foxes take on Crystal Palace at the King Power Stadium this weekend.
