Leicester City completed an unexpected run to the top of Group G with a game to spare as they are now set for knockout stage action in the UEFA Champions League.

Riyad Mahrez has not had his best season in a follow up to his breakout performances of last year, but he is continuing to improve his form in 2016-17 and another important contribution for the club’s march into the history books was his penalty goal at the half hour mark tonight.

Named to the list of Ballon d’Or finalists for his showings last season and after a prolonged transfer saga with Arsenal that saw him eventually sign a new deal with the Foxes, Mahrez has had his mind a bit distracted since the start of the campaign.

However, if there was ever a time for him to get things back under control and in the right direction the Foxes completion of their Knockout round qualification with a game in hand is one for that.

More from Foxes of Leicester

The victory over Brugge means that Leicester and Mahrez will be able to focus on their domestic results the next three weeks and rotate their squad in their final group stage game in a fortnight.

Following the match, Mahrez was excited to have had a chance to effect the outcome of the match according to his comments quoted by BBC Sport and he will be looking to do so more often in the coming weeks:

"“I have the chance to win games and we’re very happy to be first and keep going in the Champions League because it’s an unbelievable feeling. We’re feeling good. We wanted to finish first. It wasn’t that easy, especially after it went 2-1 but we did it and we’re very happy to be first.”"

Mahrez will likely next feature this coming weekend when the Foxes take on Middlesbrough in their return to Premier League action on Saturday.
