Marseille looking to swoop Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez
By James Lassey
The French outfit Marseille are reported to be looking to purchase Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez in the January transfer market.
Mahrez has been involved in six of the 17 Leicester City goals this season. He has been ever present for the Foxes and has featured eleven times.
The former PFA player of the year spent the majority of last summer trying to force a move away from the Kingpower stadium.
Former manager Craig Shakespeare rejected bids of up to £32 million by AS Roma in August and claimed that the 26-year-old is worth more.
Reports have surfaced from the Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo linking the Algerian with a move to the Ligue 1 side for a transfer fee of £26 million.
The reports come in a week where newly appointed manager Claude Puel spoke about “seducing” Mahrez to stay and how he believes putting Mahrez in the middle gives him more freedom.
Marseille are currently fourth in Ligue 1 and trail league leaders Paris Saint Germain by eight points. Mahrez was linked with a move to Marseille back in 2014 but the switch never materialised.
Marseille, under the guidance of American owner Frank McCourt, now face the realistic goal of achieving second place.
Puel will be keen to keep the Ballon d’Or nominee and will be looking to revitalise the form he showed in the 2015 title winning season.
Following Mahrez’s assist in the build up to City’s first goal during their 2-0 win over Everton. He will be one of the favourites to feature again when the Foxes face Stoke City away from home.
