Leicester City have reportedly placed interest into buying Manchester United captain Michael Carrick .

The Foxes have competition from fellow Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion and Championship side Aston Villa for the 36-year-old’s signature, according to the ESPN.

Carrick reportedly has no desire to leave Old Trafford and is happy to play under manager Jose Mourinho, despite his lack of first team action.

The England international’s only appearance this season came in the Carabao Cup in United’s 4-1 win over Burton Albion.

The Manchester United midfield boasts star quality and given that Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera all appear ahead of Carrick in the starting line-up, first team starts seem to be at a premium.

However, Mourinho is happy to have the midfielder in the squad and wants to use him for his leadership qualities. The former Chelsea boss selected Carrick as captain following Wayne Rooney’s departure in the summer, despite the captain only having one year left on his contract.

Carrick has since taken charge of United under-14s in a bid to gain his coaching badges. He hopes to fulfil a coaching role at United, once he hangs up his boots.

The former West Ham man celebrated his testimonial at Old Trafford last summer, having signed in 2006 from North London club, Tottenham Hotspur.

Questions remain as to whether the Foxes actually need the services of Carrick, manager Claude Puel still has the arrival of £22million Adrien Silva signing in January. The Frenchman has many other options in the centre of the park with Daniel Amartey, Onyinye Wilfred Ndidi and Vincente Iborra all having played a part so far this season.
