Tactics

In Moyes’ first game in charge, a 2-0 defeat away to Watford, he attempted to flood the midfield with three hard-working players in Mark Noble, Cheikou Kouyate and Pedro Obiang. He opted to use a 4-3-3 system, not too dissimilar to Bilic’s, although the Croatian did flirt with a three-at-the-back system at times.

Up front were Manuel Lanzini, Andy Carroll and Marko Arnautovic, although injuries to others meant that Moyes didn’t really have many other options. With Carroll on the pitch, the majority of West Ham’s play will be down the wing leading to crosses for the big man to attack.

This is incidentally Moyes’ preferred style of attack too, as we have notoriously come to know from his days in Manchester, and the infamous 2-2 draw with Fulham in which the Red Devils broke the Premier League record for most crosses in a game, with 81.

However when that fails, the Hammers’ entire offensive gameplan falls on Lanzini and Arnautovic to create something – anything – which isn’t ideal and can lead to losses like the one against Watford.

Having the two aforementioned as your wingers also leaves Aaron Cresswell and particularly Pablo Zabaleta exposed. The likes of Demerai Gray and Riyad Mahrez will be licking their lips after seeing Richarlison successfully go after Zabaleta time and time again last week.
