Southampton vs Leicester City: What happened last time?
By James Lassey
Wednesday sees Claude Puel’s Leicester take the journey south to face Southampton in a bid to make it four on the bounce, but what does history tell us?
Leicester have only beaten Southampton twice at the St Mary’s Stadium in the last 35 years and they will be hoping to get their first win there since 2012.
The last time the pair went toe to toe, Puel was at helm for the Saints as they ran out 3-0 winners.
James Ward-Prowse scored the first and was there to set-up Jay Rodriguez for the second before Dusan Tadic put the result beyond doubt with a late penalty.
The result left the then Claudio Ranieri side without an away win all season and equalled the worst record by a team of defending champions after 22 matches of a top-flight season, set by Ipswich in 1962-63.
Post match, Ranieri took full responsibility for the defeat stating that it was all his fault.
"“It was not a good performance,” he confessed. “It is my fault. I wanted to change the shape of my teams in the last two matches.”"
Whereas for Puel, the victory meant his side put an end to their four game losing streak and was their biggest win of the season.
However, this time round, Puel brings his side in great fettle, they have won their last three games and have scored six goals in the process.
For Southampton, they head into the clash off the back of two 1-1 draws against Bournemouth and Arsenal. Puel’s Southampton predecessor Mauricio Pellegrino will be hoping to close the five point gap separating the two sides with a win.
Southampton lead in the overall head to head tally with 32 wins to Leicester’s 25. The duo have shared the points on the remaining 27 encounters.
