Leicester City were unable to progress to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup as Manchester City go through thanks to a penalty shootout, after the game finished stalemate at 1-1.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for the Citizens, as Ilkay Gundogan breezed through the Foxes’ midfield before squaring to the winger who put the ball under Ben Harner.

The Foxes equalised through substitute Jamie Vardy, the England international dispatched his penalty past Claudio Bravo in stoppage time after Kyle Walker was adjudged to have brought down Demarai Gray inside the area.

Vardy was unable to score his second from the penalty spot in the shootout, hitting the post before Riyad Mahrez saw his effort saved as Bravo was the hero for the second round in a row.

Despite the loss, how did Leicester’s players fare?

Goalkeeper

Ben Hamer – 6/10

Leicester’s number two goalkeeper often looked shaky, highlighted by failing to claim a stray pass and colliding with Christian Fuchs, which allowed Gundogan a good chance at scoring. Then a few minutes later he palmed Gundogan’s lob onto the crossbar, sparing his blushes as the ball nearly ended up in the back of his net.

His confidence grew as the game went on though, and used his feet well under pressure on several occasions.

Defenders

Daniel Amartey – 8/10

The versatile Ghanaian made two important challenges on Brahim Diaz as the teenager was bearing down on goal. He generally did well against Manchester City’s threats down the left hand side and can stake a claim for Danny Simpson’s starting spot.

Aleksandar Dragovic – 5/10

The Austian, deputising for Wes Morgan in defence was beaten far too easily by Gundogan on his path to creating the game’s opening goal. He almost slipped later on and allowed Phil Foden to bare down on goal, but recovered to make an excellent tackle.

Harry Maguire – 8/10

The England international made a crucial block to stop Gundogan from opening the scoreline, and was a constant threat at set-pieces but was unable to convert any. Maguire made several key interceptions, and was a cool head next to his relatively inexperienced defensive partner.

He did well moving into midfield, something he has done several times this season and looks very comfortable in advanced positions with the ball.

Christian Fuchs – 5/10

Fuchs had a shaky start to the game, making a few mistakes defensively but he grew into the game and looked better on the ball especially. Although he was caught out by Silva on several occasions as the Austrian didn’t take up smart positions when marking his man.
