Forgettable February: A look back at Leicester City’s barren run in the Premier League
It wasn’t the best of months for Claude Puel and his Leicester City, as they failed to win a single Premier League game during February.
The writing was clearly on the wall for the Foxes when an off-field distraction in the form of a forgettable transfer saga changed the mood at the King Power Stadium.
Soon after, the fortunes on field took a turn, too, and Leicester City now find themselves in a spot of bother if it’s a UEFA Europa League spot that they are aiming for.
Here’s a look at the “Forgettable February” that led to the situation:
February 1, Goodison Park: Everton 2-1 Leicester City
Everton really were there for the taking on the night. The Toffees had been winless in seven games and were up against a Leicester City side that hadn’t lost a single game in 2018 – then Theo Walcott happened.
The former Arsenal winger scored a brace to sink Leicester, and mark the start of a run that has continued since.
February 3, King Power Stadium: Leicester City 1-1 Swansea City
Coming into the game after a 3-1 thumping of Arsenal, Swansea City were always going to be tricky opponents but beatable nonetheless. Leicester City got off to a good start, taking the lead through Jamie Vardy at the 17th minute, and looking good for more.
However, the hosts failed to capitalise on their domination, and a Federico Fernandez header at the 53rd minute proved enough for the Swans to run away with a valuable point.
February 10, Etihad Stadium: Manchester City 5-1 Leicester City
A memorable game for Jamie Vardy as he became the first player in the Premier League era to score against Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in one season, but a thumping for Leicester City.
The Citizens were too hot to handle that evening, as they have been all season, and the Foxes couldn’t cope. Vardy equalised soon after Raheem Sterling’s opener, but four goals from Sergio Aguero in the second half condemned Leicester to a second defeat in three Premier League games.
February 27, King Power Stadium: Leicester City 1-1 Stoke City
Leicester City finally broke their winless run against Sheffield United in the FA Cup, beating them by a narrow 1-0 to secure a quarter-final against Chelsea at home. Puel’s side were expected to finally kick on after a long awaited win, but Stoke City had other ideas.
The Potters played out of their skins against Claude Puel’s side, doing nearly everything right, though an own goal from Jack Butland cancelled out Xherdan Shaqiri’s first-half opener, and despite a late charge, the East Midlanders dropped more points.
