The final years as a Fox

The 2016/17 season was full of elation and disappointment. At 32, age had finally gotten to Huth. Though he made 33 appearances in the league and eight in the Champions League, the towering German had lost a step or two. Huth was still a solid player and an effective leader, but he was now a part of a defence that gave up 63 goals in the Premier League, as Leicester City finished in 12th place.

It was clear that Huth’s prime had come and passed. The German’s depleted skill, the meteoric rise of his replacement Harry Maguire, and the fact that an injury plagued 2017/18 campaign saw him only play for the U-23s squad meant that Huth’s tenure as a Fox was now coming to an end.

A bittersweet goodbye

No one wants to see a fan-favourite leave a club. A truly poetic ending would be for a player to play in one more final home game in front of the fans, but it will not be the case for Robert Huth. Yet, it may not be the end for his career. The big German will hopefully play for another club and end his career on his own terms.

As a Leicester City player, Robert Huth, in his 93 appearances, had 30 clean sheets, 90 tackles, 588 clearances, 167 interceptions, six goals, and one Premier League title. He helped the Foxes reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and helped Leicester City become one of the richest clubs in the world.
