Could Norwich City midfielder James Maddison be the next Leicester City acquisition from lower league football to light up the Premier League?

Maddison is tipped to be the Foxes’ next addition, following in the footsteps of Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante – but just who is the 21-year-old midfielder capturing the eye of the majority of the Premier League top ten?

2014/15 to 2015/16

Maddison made his breakthrough at League One side Coventry City, making his professional debut in August 2014 aged 17. His development was impressive, and in the summer of 2015, he was awarded the number 10 shirt for the Sky Blues.

In the 2015/16 January transfer window, Maddison joined Premier League strugglers Norwich City on a three-and-a-half-year contract. He would spend the remainder of that season back on loan at Coventry.

2016-17

On 31st August 2016, Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen loaned Maddison to further continue his his development. After an impressive spell for the Dons, he returned to Norwich and made his long-awaited debut in April 2017 against Preston North End.

2017-18

In the summer of 2017, Norwich City appointed Daniel Farke as their new Head Coach. Maddison was immediately given an extended contract and would go on to make 44 appearances for the Canaries in the 2017/18 season.

Although Maddison had operated at times in the centre or the right of midfield, it was the ‘number 10’ role where he thrived. The young Englishman scored 14 goals, contributed 8 assists and had an impressive pass completion of 86%. This contribution is made even more remarkable by the fact that Norwich only finished 14th in the Championship.

Maddison is now an England Under-21 International. His fellow professionals also named him in the PFA Championship Team of the Season 17/18. Statistically, he was also featured in Who Scored’s “Championship Best XI” with a rating of 7.43.
