Jamie Vardy could miss England’s quarter-final against Sweden
Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy could miss England’s quarter-final against Sweden on Saturday.
The 31-year sustained a groin strain during the round of 16 tie against Colombia, which also resulted in him being unable to take the fifth and final penalty.
Despite receiving an injection after the game, he is yet to recover, having already skipped training earlier today.
Dele Alli (thigh injury) and Ashley Young (ankle injury) were among the other doubts; however, they are understood to have trained behind closed doors, leaving Vardy as the only concern for Gareth Southgate.
The Leicester forward has only started one game for England at the World Cup (vs Belgium), featuring as a substitute in the other three fixtures against Tunisia, Panama and Colombia.
A lot of the Foxes faithful have wanted to see him as a regular starter alongside Harry Kane, but Southgate has so far preferred Raheem Sterling as his partner, even if he has done little to prove his manager right.
Being played out of position has definitely not helped the young winger, though there’s no doubt that he has been well below his best. There being more calls than ever to drop him, it may just be that if fit, then Jamie Vardy could start against Sweden.

The system may very well work out because of Kane’s ability to drop deep and bring others into the game. Back in 2015/16, Claudio Ranieri used a similar approach to bring the best out of Vardy, playing Shinji Okazaki just behind him. We all know the result.
