Kasper Schmeichel and Harry Maguire staying put
Leicester City manager Claude Puel told reporters that Kasper Schmeichel and Harry Maguire are not for sale.
After the 2-1 friendly defeat to Udinese Saturday, Claude Puel issued a warning to Manchester United and other sides eyeing Leicester City’s stars. Frequent rumours from Sky Sports have linked Kasper Schmeichel and Harry Maguire with transfers this summer.
Although Leicester’s manager is adamant they will not be sold. This comes after the chairman, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, also insisted the pair are staying put – regardless of any offers. At this stage of the transfer window, even an astronomical fee cannot be reinvested as easily.
Since the departure of Riyad Mahrez, the Foxes are desperate for Maguire to sign a new contract. Despite his remaining four years. An almost symbolic manoeuvre. Thus ensuring a public gesture of loyalty. The biggest problem that Leicester City may endure is the formerly mentioned players requesting a move. Therefore leaving the Foxes in another Mahrez-esque state of limbo.
Yes it is marvellous to have owners who are not prepared to sell or be bullied. Yet at what cost? Lesser squad morale, unhappy individuals, a possible a feeling of being trapped. However silly it sounds: certain footballers will use histrionics on and off the pitch. At any cost, for their own benefit.
Although it is very reassuring to hear the team boss being strict on the subject. He does have influence over squad and upper management, and it is great they are on the same page.
Jose Mourinho and Manchester United’s recruitment will take note from the indirect statement. Leicester Mercury reporter James Sharpe quoted Puel post loss to Udinese:
"“I think we can keep both players. It is crucial for us. We cannot lose players just a few days before the beginning of the season. We would not be able to find a solution and we cannot be behind. Kasper and Maguire are so valuable for us. It is important to maintain our structure, our squad and all our valuable players for the team. We know all the difficulties after the World Cup, to work in this condition to prepare all of the squad, to keep good mentality and spirit and to find a good level for every player. If we have another surprise before the end of the pre-season, it will be tough” – Claude Puel (Via: Leicestershire Live)"
It is absolutely imperative Leicester City keep their No.1 goalkeeper and centre-back. Both are world-class and bring so much to the side: quality, vision, leadership and consistency. Neither player has featured for the King Power side this summer after extended World Cup holidays.
In fact, to further the chances of keeping Maguire, I personally would definitely make him captain. Ensuring he remains a Fox, hopefully, while making the best decision for the evolution of the club.
