Leicester City in talks with Riyad Mahrez replacement
Leicester City are in talks with AS Monaco winger Rachid Ghezzal, according to L’Equipe.
Following his move from Olympique Lyonnais last season, Ghezzal has struggled for playing time, making just 11 starts for the Ligue 1 giants. He made 35 appearances in total, scoring two goals and assisting twice as many.
While the lack of chances can be blamed for his ordinary numbers at Monaco, there’s no defending the 20 goals and 14 assists in 119 appearances at Lyon.
It’s very clear that Ghezzal isn’t obviously someone who can have the same contribution that Mahrez did, which is why it’d serve Leicester well to refrain from bringing him to the King Power Stadium. In fact, it’d be better to not sign any replacement at all than sign a player who is, put crudely, average at best.
Leicester had the opportunity to sign Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who was the perfect signing in more ways than one, but they somehow managed to let him go to Brighton and Hove Albion. Now, with only a week more before the transfer window closes, Claude Puel hardly has a wide player who he can call upon as far as goals are concerned.
Marc Albrighton, Demarai Gray and Fousseni Diabate are not bad by any stretch of imagination, but are they going to take the burden off Jamie Vardy’s shoulders? No; are they going to be of much help if, in case, Vardy has an injury or a dip in form? The answer, again, is no.
If Leicester are indeed serious about this season, they can’t go into the season with things being as they are.
