Leicester City value Harry Maguire at £75 million, the same price that Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk last season, according to transfer expert Duncan Castles.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with Maguire all summer, though they have never really felt like they are close to signing the 25-year old centre-back.

The reason behind that could be the price that Leicester have set for their star defender, as Duncan Castles has now revealed.

Discussing Maguire’s situation in the Transfer Window Podcast, he said:

"“From what I’m told, the pricing, if there is to be a price for him, will be £75m – they value him at the same level as Virgil van Dijk.“That should probably give you an indication about why Jose Mourinho is reluctant to go down that route.“It’ll affect Everton, they’ve gone a long way in negotiations with Barcelona for Mina who they want to sign.“If they don’t get him they’ll have to move elsewhere, and interestingly one of their targets is Marcos Rojo, who United are prepared to sell.“So, we’ve got these last few days of the window and Manchester United are scrabbling around trying to satisfy their manager to a certain extent, and what they are doing is going to impact on the other Premier League clubs who are chasing a centre-back.”"

After the kind of displays that Maguire put on at the FIFA World Cup, Leicester are doing the right thing by asking for a record fee for him. They sold Riyad Mahrez for a relatively cheaper price to Manchester City (Watford’s Richarlison cost Everton £40 million), and it’s good to see that they aren’t making the same mistake now.

However, money isn’t the main issue in this case. If Leicester indeed let Maguire leave for £75 million, it only helps the club’s account books, not the team. There’s only a week to go before the transfer window is shut down, and anyone would be very optimistic to think that the Foxes can get a decent replacement now.

Also, with the money that Leicester would have made off sales this summer (almost £150 million), they will be treated differently in transfer dealings than most of the clubs. Put another way, they would be expected to pay about £15 million more, which, even though unfair, is what has become the norm nowadays.
