Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has advised Jurgen Klopp to sign Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.

There has been a lot of speculation about Maguire’s Leicester career, with Manchester United in particular being linked with a record move for the 25-year old.

However, Phil Thompson wants his beloved Liverpool to go all in for the young centre-back for the Merseyside outfit to further strengthen what is already looking like a very strong squad – at least on paper.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

"“I like what Jurgen Klopp has done by trying to strengthen the players behind the front three and get more goals from that area.“That part of the team is where you win titles and Fabinho, [Xherdan] Shaqiri and [Naby] Keita can provide that additional firepower. Lallana is also back.“With one more centre-back, Liverpool can be a real force; I’d be looking at snatching Harry Maguire from under Manchester United’s noses.”"

After the kind of displays that Maguire put on at the FIFA World Cup, no one is surprised that every top club wants him.

Leicester are probably doing the right thing here by reportedly asking for £75 million for their in-demand man. They sold Riyad Mahrez for a relatively cheaper price to Manchester City (Watford’s Richarlison cost Everton £40 million), and it’s good to see that they aren’t making the same mistake now.

Then again, money isn’t the main issue in this case – is it? If Leicester indeed let Maguire leave for £75 million, it only helps the club’s account books, not the team. There’s only a week to go before the transfer window is shut down, and anyone would be very optimistic to think that the Foxes can get a decent replacement now.

Also, with the money that Leicester would have made off sales this summer (almost £150 million), they will be treated differently in transfer dealings than most of the clubs. Put another way, they would be expected to pay about £15 million more, which, even though unfair, is what has become the norm nowadays.
