Harry Maguire never wanted to leave Leicester City
Leicester City defender Harry Maguire says he was never in any doubt as far as his future was concerned.
The former Hull City centre-back recently signed a new five-year deal at Leicester to bring an end to all of the rumours that he had found himself surrounded by.
However, some people are still wondering if the thought of a move to Manchester United ever crossed his mind during the summer.
Speaking ahead of England’s clash against Switzerland at the King Power Stadium, he himself cleared all the doubts, letting it be known that leaving wasn’t a possibility.
"“No, I don’t think so,” Maguire said when asked if a switch to Old Trafford was on the cards.“There was a little bit of interest there and then but it was always on my mind when I spoke to the owners, who wanted to keep me at the club and extend my contract, that I wanted to play for this club.“The last two years have been remarkable for myself. I obviously got relegated at Hull and then joined such a great club in Leicester City last season.“I played every game in the Premier League and to make a World Cup squad and to reach a semi-final is something that I am really proud of.”"
Following up an excellent season – both at domestic and international level – isn’t an easy act, but having played in some big games, particularly for England, Maguire is confident that he is well acquainted to the pressures of the game, and that he is ready to deal with them this season, too.
"“From the summer I think maybe just the experience of playing in the big games at a World Cup, playing in high-pressure games,” he said.“I haven’t done that so far in my career so to go out there, play in a World Cup and play under the pressures that were there, gives me great belief that I can go on and have another good season.”"
Sometimes, it’s hard to believe that Maguire has been able to turn into one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs so quickly, having only moved to Leicester last year after being relegated with Hull City.
The pace at which he is improving, Leicester would be very-very lucky to have him next season as well. It may not be just United that come for him, but there could be other clubs as well, who would all knock on the door with much more ferocity. Would the East Midlanders then stand in Maguire’s way is something that all of us are very keen to see.
