Kelechi Iheanacho hoping to win the Carabao Cup with Leicester City
Think no one cares about the Carabao Cup? Think again.
As Leicester City prepare to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of a competition that may not make many bat an eyelid, Kelechi Iheanacho is feeling inspired enough to win it.
The league cup triumph with Manchester City in 2016 brought the Nigerian his first – and only – piece of silverware in England, a memory that he still holds very close to his heart.
However, he would now like to add to his cabinets of trophies and memories by emulating his feat with the Citizens at Leicester.
"“That was a good memory for me,” said Iheanacho.“I think it was my first trophy, so I was happy to win it and hopefully we can do that at Leicester City as well.“We just need to keep working hard, keep going and we’ll see what happens in the future.”"
With the Premier League in mind as well, Claude Puel will ring the changes in all likelihood. While that can be frustrating for some players, especially when they are beginning to find some form, Iheanacho is happy to see his teammates given their chance on the pitch because “switching players” and “changing positions is good sometimes”.
"“It’s good to give everyone a run in the game, that’s why we’re a big squad,” he said.“It’s not just a single player, everyone is a part of the team. Switching players, changing positions is good sometimes, so that everyone will get a game, everyone will be part of the team and everyone will be happy as well.“I think our team is doing that; changing and switching players really helps get the balance we need and I think we’ll keep doing that, so it’s left for the manager to choose who’s best to play. I think our team is doing it well and we’re in good shape.”"
The second round tie against Fleetwood Town was all too easy for Leicester, as Christian Fuchs, Vicente Iborra, Iheanacho and Rachid Ghezzal got on the scoresheet to help their side to a dominant 4-0 win – but Wolves are going to be a different prospect altogether.
Since their 2-0 defeat to Leicester, a game that was in no way an easy one for Puel’s side, they are unbeaten in five games, with wins against Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and West Ham United, and draws against both the Manchester clubs – which is quite something. No surprises that Iheanacho realises how difficult it could be again.
"“I think they’ve had a good run this season; they have a good manager, good quality players and are in good shape, so it’s going to be a difficult game for us,” he added.“We played them at home, we won, but that game was difficult as well.“A cup game is going to be different, we are playing them away, but I think we have what it takes to win.”"
