Leicester City’s James Maddison and Harry Maguire have been named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad to face Croatia and Spain.

Maddison has received his first England call-up, having taken the Premier League by storm with three goals and two assists in just seven appearances. Remember, he’s only been here for a couple of months, and is still only 21.

Maguire’s inclusion, meanwhile, is hardly a surprise, given how integral he is to the Three Lions’s setup. With 14 caps already, it’s clear now that he represents the modern England under Southgate: fearless and full of adventure.

Among the other players to have been rewarded with a maiden call-up are Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho – keep an eye on this young man- Chelsea’s Mason Mount (on loan at Derby County), Fulham’s Marcus Bettinelli, Southampton’s Alex McCarthy and Watford’s Nathaniel Chalobah.

Speaking after the announcement of the 25-man squad, Southgate said:

"“It aligns with what we have done in the last 18 months.“We’ve got a few injuries in the midfield in particular – Dele [Alli], Jesse [Lingard] and Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] have been missing – and Fabian Delph, so there is an opportunity there.“Then we have a decision on which way we want to use that opportunity. We think there are some exciting young players that we’ve been tracking, either through their clubs or our junior teams.“This is a great opportunity for us to look at them.”"
