Filip Benkovic could return to Leicester City in January
Felip Benkovic has admitted that he could return to Leicester City in the January transfer window.
The 21-year old is currently on a season-long loan at Celtic, and has already formed a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Not only have his displays in Scotland have led to an increase in speculation, but they have also seen the Croatian’s stock soar in Leicester.
With a lot of fans demanding that the former Dinamo Zagreb defender be called back, Benkovic has added more fuel to fire by stating that “there is a clause in the contract which means that Leicester can bring me back in January”. He also revealed that a lot would depend on whether or not would Harry Maguire stay. Speaking to The Scottish Sun, he said:
"“I signed for Celtic until the end of the season but there is a clause in the contract which means that Leicester can bring me back in January.“So far I have spoken with some people at the club but they must wait and see what their situation is in the winter.“Maybe they will sell some players, I don’t know.“Because of that I may have to wait until the last minute of the transfer window to find out what is happening — just like the last one when I signed for Celtic.“Is Maguire the key? There has been some talk about the winter window, but I don’t know.“He has signed a new contract for five more years and I know he is happy there.“But I also know that he’s a player being looked at by top clubs and one day he may move to one of them.”"
When it comes to Maguire, we aren’t just looking at Benkovic’s fate but Leicester’s as well. There isn’t a single person on the planet who would argue that the 25-year old isn’t important for the club’s future because of how much he has to offer.
He isn’t only a top-top centre-back. He is a leader, who can be an absolute blessing for this young side on and off the field, just like Wes Morgan was – and continues to be – or Robert Huth and Esteban Cambiasso were.
Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu may be able to form a decent partnership between them, though they’ll take their time as well, meaning that Leicester are starting from the scratch again.
