Thanks in part to understudy first-team goalkeeper Danny Ward, Leicester City qualified for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. A second penalties victory sealed Southampton’s fate. Now, the Foxes stopper modestly talks of his heroics.

A successive shootout triumph in the Carabao Cup gives Leicester City faithful – not to mention, the squad and staff – a sense of good fortune or luck being firmly on their side. In a second choice lineup from manager Claude Puel, understudy goalkeeper Danny Ward stood out as a top performer – for consecutive games.

Ward is used to biding his time: playing only three times for Liverpool’s senior side on three occasions in six years on Merseyside. At present, he is Leicester City’s backup ‘keeper to Kasper Schmeichel – an honoured and revered member of the Foxes’ squad. Yet, the Welsh international cannot give a better showing of himself, than has been positively exposed.

Subsequently to saving the final Southampton penalty during Tuesday’s League Cup win, Ward spoke to media about his performance:

"“You’ve just got to pick away and try and try and read where they’re going and go full throttle at it really,” he continued.“There’s no real secret to it, you can do all the analysis on it and look at hundreds and hundreds of penalties, but at that moment, you’ve got to have the feeling and thankfully I’ve managed to save one. Everyone was brilliant tonight and I think we deserved to win.”(Via: lcfc.com)"

There is no denying this goalkeeper’s calibre as a competent player, and likable person – preferring to praise his teammates. Rather than take the entirety of plaudits.

Incidentally, as well as speaking on gow the club progressed to the business end of the competition, the 27-year-old also spoke – typically unassumingly – about his inspiring save from a tremendous free-kick: “..it was nice to play my part in that as well.”

Could Ward ever oust Kasper Schmeichel?

Well, three clean sheets – including some great saves – and two penalty shootout wins – including some marvellous stops – is incredible form. However, Kasper Schmeichel is the indisputable Leicester City No.1.; there is now easy way to replace someone of his standing at a club. Only injury or displays of a severe lack of quality for a significant period for the Dane would hand the Welshman initiative.

The Blue Army can speculate, comfortably, that Schmeichel will continue in his role as vice-captain and as the main man in-goal. Leicester City versus Manchester City takes place on December 18, kick off is 7:45pm GMT.
