£50m is not enough for Chilwell

When did we ever think a Leicester City left-back would become a £50m target? Never, would be the honest answer from most of the Blue Army. Until this term, that is. Subsequently to Chilwell’s national and top-flight exploits, it is absolutely realistic, just and unsurprising for him to attract this monumental price tag.

Full-backs are now one of the most important positions on a football pitch in the modern game. Because they begin many attacks, and at the opposite end, help defend infinitely as the players whom stop crosses and interrupt wing play. In addition to now becoming essential assist machines and goalscorers, on a more frequent basis than years gone by.

Making it imperative Leicester City keep the 21-year-old; he is irreplaceable without more money inevitably being spent or another nine years to cultivate a youth. If, and this is an extremely big ‘if’, the East Midlands club decide to sell the former-Young Lion, which defensive-left-sided players would the Foxes look at?

Well, Luke Shaw and Danny Rose are at top-six teams, so that almost certainly rules them out. Even if they are occasional second choices in their respective sides. They are great full-backs, but injuries are prevalent with both; possibly Rose trumps his Red Devils rival for the England shirt in the crocked stakes.

Besides, it appears Chilwell is gaining notoriety as the best English left-back, as well as Southgate’s preferred selection there. Therefore, why – unless being pressured as during the Mahrez saga – would Leicester even consider selling; and that goes for any club worldwide, not just a league rival.

Let’s examine the story behind Mirror Sport’s headline, “Manchester City are plotting a stunning move for £50million-rated Leicester defender Ben Chilwell”:

"That [Ben Chilwell’s] new contract will give Leicester plenty of confidence they can fend off any admirers of one of their star players, but boss Claude Puel admits they will have to show they can match the ambition of the likes of Chilwell to hang onto their prized assets (Via: Mirror Sport)"

As said earlier Mendy has his issues, despite being in glittering form previously this campaign. Thusly, it seems nothing but hearsay that Man City would bid for another expensive athlete in a well covered area of their exceptional squad. While Foxes boss Claude Puel believes the club’s ambition matches the player’s; but that must be proven – by winning trophies and qualifying for Europe.
