Leicester City defender signs contract extension
Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey has signed a contract extension with the club, keeping him at the King Power Stadium till 2022.
The 23-year old still had 18 months left on his current contract, but the fact that he has extended it by three and a half years shows that Claude Puel clearly sees him as a long-term option.
Amartey, who has just undergone an ankle surgery, expressed his delight after signing a new contract, stating that he is very happy at the moment because of being given regular chances by Puel.
"“I am very happy to sign this contract at Leicester City.“I’m an easy guy, I work hard, I focus and by God’s grace, my recovery is getting better. I was playing well and then I got this injury, but I have to be strong when I come back.“Personally, I am happy because last season I didn’t get much playing time and this season the manager gave me the chance so, for me, I was very happy.“I first have to recover from my injury. I pray to God to recover and when I come back, I have to be strong with a strong mentality, I must work hard, and do my best.”"
Puel has come under a lot of scrutiny for his penchant for certain players and Amartey is one of them. The supporters are of the opinion – and rightly so – that Ricardo Pereira shouldn’t be moved from the right-back position at all; however, before the Ghanaian’s injury, the Leicester boss had been very consistent in playing Amartey as the right-back and Pereira further up front on the wing.
It worked at times, but it did go wrong a lot of the times as well because of Amartey’s defensive deficiencies. Unfortunately for the former FC Copenhagen defender, when he had finally started to improve a bit, he got injured, and Pereira has taken full advantage of that.
When he’s finally back from injury, there is a possibility that he may not have Puel as his boss anymore, which could throw his future into doubt. Even if the Frenchman is still there, it’d interesting to see as to how does he manage to fit Amartey back into his XI.
