Leicester City are interested in Southampton’s out of favour striker Charlie Austin, according to the Daily Mail.

The 29-year old has been reportedly given the green light to pack his bags and get going from the St. Mary’s Stadium as Ralph Hasenhuttl doesn’t quite see him fitting into his system.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, who Leicester were beaten by last week, are also looking to sign the former Queens Park Rangers striker this January.

To be honest, Austin doesn’t really have the feel of a Claude Puel signing to him. He’s nearing his 30s and is not worth investing in.

Leicester do need a target man – that goes without saying – but they don’t need someone who doesn’t even offer any guarantee of bringing something with him – anything – that anyone already at Leicester doesn’t have.

Austin has scored three goals in 18 appearances this campaign and if we are being optimistic, he would double that tally at Leicester this season but that’s all.

Leicester need to sign someone who is young, complete and has a good resale value at the same time. They have been able to unearth a lot of gems in the last two or three years, so they should avoid a panic buy like Austin and focus on someone who can do the club a world of good in the long term.

All has not been lost in the case of Kelechi Iheanacho, so trying to nourish him further is one option as well. Agreed, it has not worked well with him so far, but he does have the raw ingredients to succeed. Also, it’s worth pointing out that Leicester have invested their money in him, not faith or time yet.
