Leicester City loanee Islam Slimani has been told that he won’t be featuring for Fenerbahce again, according to Turkish outlet Fanatik.

He seemed set to leave for Real Betis in January but the move didn’t materialise, leaving him in an awkward situation with Fenerbahce.

Now it has emerged that he has been frozen out of the squad for the rest of the season – having not played in the last two games – and isn’t even training with the team either. Poor Slimani.

Sent to Fenerbahce on a season-long loan with the hope that he might rediscover his scoring form, Slimani has been a bigger failure in Turkey than he was at Leicester.

He has only scored five times in 25 appearances across all competitions, the sort of return that convinced Claude Puel to send him elsewhere.

He must now stay put and hope for manager Ersun Yahal to change his mind – which, by the way, doesn’t seem like it’s possible.

How times change. When Slimani was signed from Sporting CP for a club record £28 million, he was expected to form a formidable partnership with Jamie Vardy, but he just couldn’t find that touch from his days in Portugal. He still hasn’t and probably won’t at this age.

He’ll be 31 by the time his loan ends, and it’s unlikely that he’d be welcomed back in a young Leicester side, not with Brendan Rodgers at the helm anyway. Yes, he may stand a good chance if Sam Allardyce had been appointed as the new boss.
