Where Caglar Soyuncu must improve his game for Leicester City
By Matt Taylor
Despite being linked with a loan move away last week, Caglar Soyuncu impressed in Leicester City’s comfortable 4-1 victory over Huddersfield.
The Turkish international was selected as a result of both Johnny Evans’ soar hip and the birth of Harry Maguire’s first child. It was his first appearance since December for Leicester City, but it barely showed.
Soyuncu recorded the highest number of touches for any player in the match (78), underlining his influence on proceedings. This confidence was especially prominent in his Maguire-esque marauding dribble in the game’s early exchanges that allowed Harvey Barnes to set up James Maddison for the Foxes’ first real chance of the day.
Similarly, the 22-year-old’s defensive display was mostly marvellous. Not only did he manage four interceptions and seven clearances, he registered 90% pass completion and won all of his five aerial duels over the course of the match, stats via WhoScored.
Following Leicester City’s victory, Brendan Rodgers heaped further praise on his centre-half:
"“I think a special mention today to Cags our centre half. He was only told this morning he was playing.”“Apart from a loose pass at the end when he was tired, I thought he was outstanding in the game having not played for five months.”Via Mail Online"
However, there is undoubtedly an aspect of Soyuncu’s game that must be addressed. In his last two league starts, he has cost his side a goal. On Saturday, this was due to a reckless penalty, while a careless challenge against Fulham back in December allowed Aboubakar Kamara ample space in Leicester’s box to score.

It is simple decisions that seem to cost the defensive starlet . These particular mistakes were also uncharacteristic of his overall performance in both games, eradicating such errors of his game will ensure he shines in the Premier League.
Fixing this side of the Turk’s game will surely be made easier by the presence of three experienced central defenders surrounding him in the dressing room. Soyuncu must use the collective wisdom of Wes Morgan, Evans and Maguire, as he shapes and improves his game.
Overall, with the constant speculation that Maguire will depart the King Power this summer, it is refreshing to see Soyuncu performing so well after being sidelined for an extended period.
In fact the Turk was one of seven under 23’s who started for City this weekend. The future is certainly bright for these young Foxes, who will only improve from here.
