A giant must fall for Leicester to take their place

For Leicester to break the top 6, one of England’s most prestigious clubs will have to drop out of the established elite. Currently, the most likely to do so is Chelsea, who have seemingly been stuck in a constant cycle of success and disarray over the last decade, as they face an uncertain future under Mauricio Sarri.

Although they now sit in third, 16 points clear of the Foxes, it looks increasingly likely that their talisman, Eden Hazard, will make a long-reported switch to Real Madrid this summer. That, combined with a looming two-year transfer ban, could be detrimental enough that Leicester could leapfrog the Blues into the top six next season.

More from Foxes of Leicester

After claiming a surprise victory at Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign, there is an opportunity for the Foxes to do the double over a top six side for the first time since their reintroduction to the Premier League when Chelsea visit the King Power on the final day of the season.

The last three games on City’s fixture list will be particularly telling with regard to their top six ambitions, as they are pitted against Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea. This run of games will offer an accurate representation of how far they are from a top six finish in the coming seasons.

Under Rodgers, the Foxes have proven their proficiency at putting poor sides to bed. However, his side have not yet faced a top six opponent. With victories over both Manchester City and Chelsea earlier this season, it is clear that Leicester’s squad are still extremely capable of causing an upset.

The question that remains is, can they replicate those kind of results under their new manager? Taking points from the top six will be essential, if City are serious about challenging the Premier League’s elite status quo.
