‘He breeds confidence into players’: Harry Maguire on Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers
Harry Maguire has heaped praise on Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers, stating that “he breeds confidence into players”.
Leicester have been an unstoppable force since Rodgers’ arrival, winning four of their five games under the Irishman.
They’ve faced Fulham, Burnley, AFC Bournemouth and Huddersfield Town during this run, beating them by an aggregate score of 11-3.
It might not sound much of an achievement to some, but it is worth pointing out that these are exactly the kind of teams that Leicester struggled to beat under Claude Puel.
Now, however, the Foxes are fearlessly taking them on, dominating as they should and playing like they are expected – which is a welcome change that Rodgers is solely responsible for.
Like a majority of the fans, Maguire – who recently welcomed his first child, Lilly Saint Maguire – can’t praise him enough. He said:
"“He’s a really good coach who will improve us as a team massively. The club has shown really great ambition in luring him here.“He breeds confidence into players, he’s helping to bring the younger players through, does a lot of work on the training pitch and his man management is really top. He’s made a really big impact.“Over the last four games, we’ve started to pick up results we’ve warranted.“We’re scoring the first goal in a lot of games which is really important so we can kick on and get a second and third.“The performances have been really good and I think in every game, we’ve deserved to win.”"
Despite their hot streak, Rodgers’ side are in a position wherein they cannot afford to drop even a single point, especially against Newcastle United, who statistically represent one of Leicester’s easier opponents in the run-in. Since the promotion to the Premier League, Leicester have faced the Magpies seven times and won on five occasions, a formidable record.
But Maguire sees them differently, as he thinks they are going to be a tough team to beat. Regardless, he is confident that “we have more than enough ability in our squad to go and beat any team in the Premier League”.
"“I think they’ll be very hard to beat. They don’t concede many goals and don’t lose by many goals,’ said the England international.“They’ll probably sit back in a low block and try hitting us on the counter attack.“They’re a good team, with a great manager and have had a good season. It’ll be a tough game, but one that we’re looking forward to.“We’ve got to take each game as it comes. We’ve had a nice little run of fixtures and the boys have capitalised on them really well, winning four games on the bounce is a great achievement.“Now we’re coming into a set of fixtures that are difficult, but I think we have more than enough ability in our squad to go and beat any team in the Premier League.”"
Leicester welcome Rafael Benitez’ Newcastle to the King Power Stadium tomorrow night.
