Manchester United may be a structural wreck but that doesn’t mean they stop overlooking that and keep going for expensive acquisitions instead.

The Red Devils have reportedly plunged back into the race for Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire, this time with more purpose and more money. That’s what the Evening Standard say anyway.

Manchester United are understood to have made an offer in excess of £70 million last summer, which Leicester rejected immediately.

The Foxes’ reported price being around £90 million, you’d think that United’s offer will at least have to be well clear of the £75 million that Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk last season. That’s what the bare minimum is for a world-class defender these days.

Like many of Leicester’s top talents, Maguire does have a long-term contract with the club with four years still remaining on his current deal.

What that means is that Leicester are in a very strong position to negotiate and are likely to not let the centre-back leave for anything less than what they want. Still, they must be careful with what they do and what they don’t this summer.

Irrespective of how good the offer on the table is, you surely can’t let go a player who the team relies so heavily on, not just for his football but the leadership that he brings as well.

Even if you do decide to sell him, then you have to have a replacement lined-up. Maguire doesn’t have a replacement. Such well-rounded defenders are incredibly hard to find these days and Leicester, if he leaves, may get to know that the harsh way.
