Brendan Rodgers speaks of Lee Congerton’s appointment as head of recruitment at Leicester City and the possibility of incoming transfers this summer.

In a little recap of 2018/19: Leicester City began the season with much maligned Claude Puel as boss. He was sacked in February following a brief reprieve for beating a couple of top six sides. Brendan Rodgers came in shortly afterwards and the Foxes never looked back.

Only three months into the campaign tragedy struck as chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha died in a devastating helicopter crash at King Power Stadium. Some, including Foxes of Leicester, think the club as a whole did magnificently to attain the promising position they now find themselves in.

This is as crucial a summer for incoming transfers, and preventing quality outgoing ones, in recent memory. Quite possibly ever. Blue Army members believe they have the correct person for man management, tactical awareness and the profile to attract more adept players at the helm.

However, the club hierarchy, presumably utilising Rodgers’ input, have appointed a new head of recruitment in Lee Congerton. In fact, the Northern Irishman worked with the new employee at Celtic and Chelsea. Leicester’s manager recently spoke of the development:

"“It’s not about getting an appointment, it’s about getting the right appointment,” Rodgers said.“I know Lee from my time at Chelsea and he’s always produced very good players.“He knows what the club expect here, what they want, and I think it will be a really good appointment for the club.”Via Leicester Mercury"

With regards to this summer’s prospective transfer business, Rodgers was as honest as he most often is:

"“In modern football, the club will bring the players in,” said Rodgers.“My strength is on the coaching field and that’s what I do, that’s my natural environment.“Of course you will always recommend and work together to bring in the best players we possibly can.“But there will be no big change to how it was before here. The club will bring in the players and the coach and manager has input into that.”"

That clarification puts to bed negative reports this writer hoped didn’t apply to the East Midlands clubs. There are stories of heads of recruitment in global football wielding enough power to startlingly override their team’s gaffer. And, more realistically, not seeking or regularly trusting the advice of the one to work with the athletes. Thankfully that ‘system’ doesn’t seem to be in place within Foxes’ structure.
