Leicester City: 2018/19 season review
Best performance of the season: Leicester City 2-1 Manchester City
The 3-0 drubbing of Arsenal might impel many into thinking that it was Leicester’s best display but it really wasn’t. Make no mistake, Leicester were irresistible that day but they were ingenious in the 2-1 win over City.
After the visitors had taken the lead pretty early on, we all thought, “Ah, s**t, here we go again,” but Puel had other plans. He switched from a 4-5-1 to a 4-1-4-1, Marc Albrighton and Choudhury swapped flanks, James Maddison went central, the full-backs pushed up and in the blink of an eye, the game had been turned on its head.
It’s not too often that Guardiola, the world’s best manager by some distance, is outthought by someone, especially after his side have taken the lead and are well in control. Sadly, that game was the last we saw of Puel’s brilliance but the memories will stay forever.
Worst performance of the season: Leicester City 1-4 Crystal Palace
Quite easily the most disastrous showing of the season. Leicester were beaten all ends up in their 4-1 annihilation at the hands of Crystal Palace – their sixth consecutive game without a win. It was the first time that Leicester had lost four successive league games at the King Power Stadium and shortly after, Puel had been sacked.
The display was symptomatic of the kind of season it had been for Leicester: frustrating and generally a test of patience. They had 65% possession and 27 shots but only a Jonny Evans goal to show for it. The visitors, on the other hand, saw just 35% of the ball and had seven shots. Four of those found the back of the net.
By the time the whistle was blown, you could tell that the players had given up on their manager and the club needed a change.
