The perfect time for Leicester City to break into Premier League top six
By Matt Taylor
With a young core, deep pockets and English giants faltering, a perfect storm is brewing for Leicester City to achieve their European ambition.
There is no time like the present for the Foxes to capitalise on the dwindling dominance of the top six. In particular, after missing out on a crucial Champions League spot, this summer could prove to be a turning point for both Arsenal and Manchester United, for better or for worse.
These faltering giants will be looking nervously over their shoulders at the exciting outfits sitting just below them in the table. The vulnerability of sides such as Arsenal was prominent in their consecutive drubbings from Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester. Most importantly, the Foxes breezed past the Gunners, albeit with an extra man, underlining their ambitious intentions under new boss, Brendan Rodgers.
However, Arsenal aren’t the only member of the perennial top six that are potentially susceptible to losing their place in the exclusive club next season. With a two window transfer ban looming, an unsettled star player and manager likely to depart after only one season, Chelsea are also in danger of being caught by the rest of the pack.
Leicester registered a 1-0 aggregate score over the Blues this season and, with Eden Hazard seemingly set for a dream move to Real Madrid, the 2019/20 campaign could prove to be a torrid one at Stamford Bridge, opening the door for Leicester to sneak into a European place.
Manchester United are also in a state of fluctuating disarray. Between their poor form in the back end of the season and their lack of a clear decision-maker regarding transfers, the future is unclear for the Red Devils.
Although these sides undoubtedly still possess plenty of spending powder and have the reputation to bring in top players, they could start to falter domestically, if necessary changes are not made. Leicester are an ever-developing club, and will want to capitalise on any weaknesses shown by the powerhouses above them in the Premier League table.
