What to do with Leicester City’s fringe players this summer
By Matt Taylor
Leicester City undoubtedly have a starting XI worthy of competing with the Premier League’s big boys, but their squad depth leaves a little to be desired.
This assessment includes players who appeared for City this season or will be returning from successful loan spells, with the established starters omitted as their roles at the King Power are clear.
Defenders
Filip Benkovic – Push into starting XI
Former Celtic star Frank McAvennie compared the Croatian to Virgil Van Dijk, following his impressive performances while on loan in Scotland. When he returns to Leicester, he will surely act as third string behind the starting pair of Harry Maguire and Johnny Evans.
At the tender age of just 21, City fans will surely be excited by the return of such a hot prospect, who will continue his development under Brendan Rodgers.
Wes Morgan – Phase into coaching role
At 35 years of age, Morgan will surely have retirement at the back of his mind. Leicester’s long-standing club captain possesses all of the leadership and know-how required to coach, while acting as a distinguished backup centre-half to City’s established defensive starting pair.
Caglar Soyuncu – Loan
With only eight appearances in all competitions in his maiden season in England, places in the Leicester starting XI will only get harder to come by with the return of Benkovic. Soyuncu undoubtedly needs consistent minutes. Therefore, a loan deal would suit the Turkish international, allowing him to continue his development.
Daniel Amartey – Keep for rotation
The Ghanaian is adept at playing in multiple positions, most recently as a right back before his season was sadly cut short by a broken ankle. Once the 24-year-old recovers, he will be a useful and extremely versatile squad player.
Christian Fuchs – Keep until contract end
Fuchs shocked many as he signed a one year extension with the Foxes. It was expected that the Austrian would depart City this summer in order to unite with his family in New York. However, the cult hero’s extended stay in Leicester came as good news to many.
The 33-year-old is a solid backup to England international, Ben Chilwell.
