Harry Maguire has reportedly told his friends that he is set to sign for Manchester City, as per the Express.

The 26-year old will probably be completing a deal this week, leaving Manchester United empty-handed yet again in a well-documented pursuit, and Leicester City with a lot of cash.

According to the Mirror, the transfer fee will be a world-record £80 million, while Maguire would be pocketing an astonishing £280,000-a-week at the Etihad Stadium.

There’s going to be a lot of brouhaha over the transfer fee and whether or not is Maguire worth it, but the fact is, he is going to be the world’s most expensive defender. That is that, really.

How much do you demand for a player is determined not only by how desperate the other club is but also by how important the player already is where he plays.

City need Maguire. They really do. And Maguire has been extremely important to Leicester over the last two seasons. He has been as much responsible for the club’s success as anyone else and the price is therefore justified.

And this is how it is in the modern market anyway. If anyone is good, he doesn’t come cheap. If you’re not willing to pay, jog on.

People can complain about the massive sums that Leicester are asking for, but they’re not the ones who have made the transfer market what it is today.

It is deals like Paul Pogba’s or Neymar Jr.’s that really need to be looked at, not this one. Leicester are merely observing by the norms set by the others. If that profits them, that’s a bonus.
