Three ideal candidates to replace Harry Maguire at Leicester City
By Matt Taylor
Fabian Schar
Acquired by Newcastle for just £3 million, a bargain on par with Leicester’s capture of Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion last summer, the Swiss international was superb in his maiden season in England.
AC Milan are the main club linked with a move for the 27-year-old, but, should Maguire part ways with the Foxes, they should put themselves in contention to take another player from St. James’ park this summer.
Surprisingly, the 6″2′ defender contributes his fair share of goals for both club and country. In 42 senior caps for Switzerland, Schar has notched seven goals. Not bad for a big lad. Domestically, it is a similar story, as he registered four goals in 24 Premier League appearances this season.
The ex-Basel man displayed his aptitude for carrying the ball comfortably out of his defence earlier this year at the King Power as he meandered into Leicester’s third with apparent ease.
Just as Tarkowski would be a full like for like replacement of Maguire, Schar would give Leicester comfort in possession at the back, as well as defensive solidity. Furthermore, he would probably cost the least out of the three, while the departure of Rafa Benitez from the Magpies would surely have unsettled the Newcastle squad.

In terms of his defensive competency, Schar has the highest tackles per 90 minute rate on this shortlist, making an average of 2.5 per full game -our stats are from, you’ve guessed it, WhoScored.
With a 68.1% average pass completion, the Swiss international is certainly less accurate than Maguire, but he would be a worthy replacement to partner Evans for the Foxes, if Manchester United stump up the world record fee.
