Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire does not think he’s worth the £80 million that the club is demanding from Manchester United, as per Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol.

United have been pursuing Maguire since the last summer but Leicester’s obstinacy has not let them come anyway near their long-term target.

The Foxes’ valuation of the 26-year old has been the same – £80 million – all this time; however, the Red Devils just do not want to match it.

They have been willing to pay £70 million but are not necessarily in favour of making the England international the most expensive defender in the world – which Liverpool’s £75 million recruit, Virgil Van Dijk, is at the moment.

It seems Maguire doesn’t see the world’s most expensive defender in himself either, as revealed by Solhekol. Speaking on the Transfer Talk Podcast, he said:

"“The big problem is Manchester United are offering about £70m.“Leicester want about £80m, so there is about a £10m difference in valuation.“If United were to pay £80m for him that would be a world record, more than the £75m that Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk.“I don’t think United want to make him the most expensive defender in the world.“We’re also being told that Maguire himself is, I have to choose my words carefully, I don’t think when he looks in the mirror he sees a £70m player.“I’m sure he thinks he’s a very, very good player but I don’t think he thinks he’s worth what Leicester are asking for him at £80m.“So that’s the situation we are at at the moment.”"

Maybe we are nearing that time when Maguire hands in a transfer request out of frustration.

There cannot be two years of the same transfer story without there being something to it. The former Hull City man does want a move, and while Leicester’s asking price is more or less justified given the importance of Maguire to them, it is only in everyone’s best interests that he be sold.

£70 million is obviously not massively off what Leicester think Maguire should ideally cost, so accepting the offer does them no harm at all. It is more than enough to land another world-class defender, really.

But if they do continue being stubborn, they would pave way for an ugly, ugly transfer saga that even threatens to derail a season that hasn’t even got underway yet.
