Leicester City have signed Dennis Praet from Sampdoria for a reported £18 million.

The Belgian has signed a five-year contract with the club as he becomes the fourth signing of the summer, joining former teammate Youri Tielemans, Justin James and Ayoze Perez.

He had also been linked with AC Milan and Valencia; however, it is Leicester who have emerged triumphant in the end.

There is also some sort of victory in the fact that the Foxes have got their man for £6 million less than the original asking price. Leicester were patient and relentless at the same time, and the reward is a really good deal.

What’s questionable here is whether Praet, another central midfielder, is what Leicester needed at the moment.

They already have a lot of options in the midfield who can immediately slot in and get the job done but can the same be said about the wide positions and the central defence? No.

It would have been much more sensible to spend £40 million+ on a defender than £18 million on a midfielder, no matter how talented he is.

Maybe Brendan Rodgers feared losing him to someone else in the scenario that Leicester decided to buy him next season, but that is no reason to not spend where you really need to strengthen, especially when you do have the funds.

Regardless, it is too late to discuss it. Leicester can only hope that Caglar Soyuncu and Filip Benkovic come good, while Marc Albrighton and Harvey Barnes et al do what they are expected to as well.
