Liverpool should be looking at Leicester City midfielder James Maddison if they are “going to that next step up”, says Jamie Carragher.

The former Norwich City midfielder had a remarkable first season in the Premier League as he looked pretty much at home in the top division.

Overall, he scored seven goals and recorded as many assists in 38 appearances in all competitions for Leicester last campaign.

For a 22-year old who hadn’t tasted top-flight football before his transfer, those are mind-boggling numbers. No wonder Carragher wants him at Anfield.

"“I think he is the one player outside of the top six who Liverpool should be looking at,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.“People have been talking about Coutinho coming back, but obviously that hasn’t happened as he’s gone to Bayern Munich.“But if you are looking in the Premier League, yes he will cost a lot of money, but he should be the one Liverpool are looking at if you’re going to that next step up."

When the rumours of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool’s interest in Maddison were doing the rounds, The Sun reported that Maddison wants to stay where he is, stating that he is happy where he is.

The report also suggested that Brendan Rodgers could even try and give his star no.10 an improved contract as a deserved reward for his displays for the side. It could certainly help put-off his potential suitors.

At this point, it would be a bit silly were Maddison to leave. He has a leading role at the club and is central to the future plans, he has a top coach and fantastic young players around him. That’s all that any player would really want.

But that said, the lure of Liverpool is something else. And when they knock on your door, you just cannot ignore it – like Harry Maguire couldn’t when United came for him.
