Big clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool are too hard to turn down, says Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.

In case you are wondering, the gaffer was speaking of James Maddison, who has been the subject of interest from these two clubs.

United have been wanting every Leicester player anyway, given the serious lack of quality at the self-proclaimed “world’s biggest club”, while Liverpool’s interest in Maddison dates back to his Norwich City days.

When asked about the same, here’s what a very honest Rodgers said:

"“I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been at Liverpool where I understand the draw of that type of club,” Rodgers declared, when asked about the rumours surrounding Maddison.“Liverpool and Manchester United are two of the biggest clubs by far.“There’s other great clubs, there’s big clubs, but those two, in terms of worldwide status, are above the other clubs.“There are other great clubs that are trying to catch them up but those two, in my experience, are a level above.“So whenever a player gets an opportunity to go to a club like that, to experience that type of pressure, that expectation – and of course there’ll be a financial side to it as well, let’s be real – that as a package in a short career is maybe something that is too hard to turn down.“I understand it, I get it.“What we’re building here is exciting in how we’re trying to progress and with the new training ground and everything else, however, for lots of players, that draw is still there and I understand it.”"

Maddison has started this season on just as bright a note as he ended the last season on.

He has two assists in five Premier League games and was excellent in the wins over AFC Bournemouth and Sheffield United in particular.

His reputation now only getting better and a place in Gareth Southgate’s England surely a matter of when rather than if, it would be a bit silly were the 22-year old to leave.

He has a leading role at the club and is central to the plans going forward, he has a top coach and fantastic young players around him. That’s all that any player would really want.

But as Rodgers said, the lure of clubs like United and Liverpool  is something else. And when they knock on your door, you just cannot ignore it – like Maguire couldn’t when the Red Devils came for him.

Like it or not but there is a feeling that he will almost inevitably leave next season.
