Liverpool could sign James Maddison in January, says Noel Whelan
Liverpool can sign Leicester City sensation James Maddison in the January transfer window, says Noel Whelan.
The no.10 is the most in-demand Leicester player since the departure of Harry Maguire – and it is not hard to understand exactly why.
Liverpool and Manchester United have both been touted as the 22-year old’s potential destinations, although Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also remain interested.
While Leicester have been issuing constant warnings to Maddison’s suitors, no one is sure whether he will stay at the King Power Stadium for too long.
Whelan for one thinks Jurgen Klopp could snap up the midfielder as soon as January. Speaking to Football Insider, he said:
"“James Maddison is absolutely a Liverpool type of player, I can see him joining. He can be the new Coutinho.“He’s similar to him in many ways – great feet, can run with the ball, can see a pass that no-one else can and scores wonder goals.“He’s still young but already he’s a real gem and his value is going to get higher and higher over the next few years.“All the big teams will be watching him, but they will know he won’t come cheap.“Can Liverpool sign him in January? Of course. They got [Virgil] Van Dijk in a January window and haven’t looked back.“Liverpool will also have money to spend after not buying anyone senior this summer.“Jurgen Klopp and the recruitment team have a brilliant record in the transfer market, and Maddison could fit in well.”"
Maddison has started this season on just as bright a note as he ended the last season on.
He has two assists and a goal in six Premier League games – including a stunning winner against Tottenham last week.
His reputation now only getting better and a place in Gareth Southgate’s England surely a matter of when rather than if, it would be a bit silly were the former Norwich City man to leave.
He has a leading role at the club and is central to the plans going forward, he has a top coach and fantastic young players around him. That’s all that any player would really want.
But as you know, the lure of clubs like United and Liverpool is something else. And when they knock on your door, you just cannot ignore it – like Maguire couldn’t when the Red Devils came for him.
