Micky Adams advises James Maddison to not listen to the hype
Former Leicester City boss Mickey Adams has advised James Maddison to not listen to the hype and risk getting ahead of himself.
The 22-year old is rumoured to be a Manchester United target, with Liverpool and Manchester City touted as potential destinations as well.
Moving to Old Trafford might be an exciting prospect, of course, but it does not change the fact that United’s glory days are long gone.
They are not the club they used to be and it does not look like they are going to get any better anytime soon, not until they stop making decisions based on emotions anyway.
Adams, who managed Leicester from 2002 to 2004, is not oblivious to United’s shambolic state of affairs and has therefore exhorted Maddison to be careful while also adding that he must move to either City or Liverpool for that next step.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, he said:
"“Leicester have shown in terms of wages and ambition that they’re as good as anyone.“Maddison would have to go to Manchester City or a Liverpool to improve on what he’s got at Leicester.“As a young man he’s just got to keep developing his game and working hard.“He must not listen to the hype or get ahead of himself. That’s the time it bites you on the backside as a footballer.”"
Adams is spot on. There is no logical reason why any player in his right mind would want to join the Red Devils at the moment.
Yes, it is a different case if you prefer money over football; however, if you want to develop as a player, then United is not the club for you.
Harry Maguire has already moved to the self-proclaimed biggest club in the world but what good has it done to him? He’s not even going to get Champions League football at United, let alone win a trophy. If he were to be honest with himself, he would admit that it has proved to be the wrong decision.
Maddison would not want that to happen. He is destined for big things – Manchester United aren’t.
