Leicester City midfielder James Maddison is a doubt for the weekend’s Premier League clash against Southampton, according to Goal.

He is understood to have sustained an ankle injury and did have to play through a lot of pain in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Burnley last week.

If – and this isn’t a big if – the injury is anywhere near serious, there’s no way Brendan Rodgers is going to risk him, given how congested the schedule is going to be in the coming months – especially around the festive period.

What this means is that Youri Tielemans could once again take an advanced role, with Dennis Praet, who came on in the latter stages of the game against the Clarets, occupying the central midfield alongside Wilfred Ndidi.

It does seem as if everything that is happening at Leicester these days is related to Maddison. Since the 22-year old went to a casino on a night when he had been ruled out of England’s encounter against Czech Republic because of an illness, he has been in the papers for all kinds of reasons.

Most recently, The Athletic’s super reliable David Ornstein has suggested that he could soon be signing a new deal with the Foxes.

However, he also reported that there remain other sources with links to all the three parties who are confident that Maddison will be at Manchester United next season.
