“Everyone in the league is waiting for Leicester City to slip”
A Leicester City player spoke after the 9-0 win over opponents Southampton, stating: “Everyone in the league is waiting for Leicester City to slip”.
A 9-0 drubbing of decent opponents certainly gets the blood flowing, confidence up and the national press’ interest peaked – if it they weren’t intrigued already. Leicester City demolished Southampton – albeit with the south coasters a man down for most of the evening.
Ayoze Perez continued to repay his transfer fee and faith shown, following his assist at Liverpool, with a wonderful hat-trick against the Saints. The inimitable Jamie Vardy also provided three goals to the tally. With Harvey Barnes, Youri Tielemans, Ben Chilwell and, of course, James Maddison prevalent too.
It wasn’t just an incredible scoreline either, the Foxes also matched a record: Manchester United’s 9-0 home victory over Ipswich Town was the largest win ever in Premier League history. Now that honour is matched, despite Leicester being away from home. Oh, as well as Friday’s contest being naturally the largest ever margin for away triumphs in the premiership.
Not to mention that the game was the closest fixture to it being one year since late Leicester City chairman, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, passed away in awful circumstances. Khun Vichai, beloved by the Foxes faithful, lost his life in a helicopter disaster at King Power Stadium on October 27, 2018.
Ben Chilwell on Leicester City
At the final whistle, media scrambled to get the thoughts of Vardy, Perez and boss Brendan Rodgers. Yet it was left-back, and goalscorer on the evening, Ben Chilwell who, arguably, gave the most interesting insight to the East Midlanders’ desire and focus:
"“Everyone in the league is waiting for Leicester City to slip. It’s nice to be at the top of the table, we really do want to stay there and there is confidence within the dressing room that we can stay there.“We push each other hard in training, the gaffer doesn’t let our standards slip. It’s a really good squad and we just need to keep progressing.“We’re here and we’re here to stay at the top of the league. We just need to keep working hard.”– Ben ChilwellVia: BBC Sport"
