Finishing in the top four would be an “outstanding achievement” for Leicester City and bigger than a Carabao Cup win, says Matt Jarvis.

The Foxes beat Burton Albion 3-1 the other night to make it into the quarter-final of the league cup for the third season running – although they would not want to exit at the same stage for the third season running.

With a cup win looking like a real possibility for Leicester, seeing as they have the necessary squad depth to go for it, many are asking what would be bigger: a top four spot or success in a cup competition?

As far as Jarvis is concerned, a European spot is clearly the bigger of the two.

"“I’m very impressed, the way they’re playing is fantastic to watch,” he said on Sky Sports News. “They’re scoring goals, it’s entertaining, and they’re really pushing on. It looks like the whole squad are enjoying themselves.“Leicester have experienced winning the Premier League, that buzz when everything was unexpected.“I think the squad now is more than capable of having a really good European run. It’s going to be very difficult but at the moment you can fully see them getting that top four spot.“They obviously want a [domestic] cup run because the squad is very good but finishing in top four would be an outstanding achievement this season rather than the cup win.”"

Indeed. With all due respect to the league cup, it is obviously not better than a place in club football’s premier club competition – it never was, it isn’t now and it will never be.

The UEFA Champions League is what every club in Europe dreams of playing in. It is every player’s route to immortality, for it represents the pinnacle and that is where every professional footballer wants to be.

Winning some domestic silverware would, without a smidgen of doubt, be a good feeling and automatically make this season a roaring success; however, a UCL spot would make the campaign historic, and history is what we all want this side to make.
