Caglar Soyuncu’s interviews are as good as his football: Leicester
This season Turkish centre-back Caglar Soyuncu has taken the Premier League by storm with Leicester City. Yet his interviews are almost as good as his play.
If you now had to choose between Caglar Soyuncu or Harry Maguire, it’s fairly obvious many Leicester City supporters would select the Turk over his English counterpart.
When those fans are presented with the fact that Soyuncu comes with an overall profit of £61 million on the deal – thanks to Manchester United – through that choice, it’s an easy one.
With the ease that the Turkish international has slotted in, it is also simple to understand why he is now an almost instant cult hero on Filbert Way. Intense tackling with thought, contrasted by adeptness and subtlety is his game. His passion for the club, team-mates and a winning mentality comes naturally.
That skill set has garnered comparisons with the very best, one level above Maguire, such as Virgil Van Dijk. However, the Leicester City player will have to improve slightly his passing and traveling with the ball to reach that height.
For example, you’ll rarely see the Dutchman hoof the ball into the stands. More often than Soyuncu, Van Dijk often finds a colleague following a neat turn away from trouble. Although the echelon Soyuncu can reach in world football, is the pinnacle.
Leicester City entertainer
Another reason the 23-year-old centre-back is so loved already at King Power Stadium, is that he is admired by the entire squad. Not to mention being an entertaining figure – whether intentional or not.
In a recent interview with the Times, Soyuncu spoke candidly and particularly interestingly while revealing details of his style. With Tanguy Ndombele, Callum Wilson and Christian Pulisic already on the receiving end of his adroitness:
"“In the position I play I’m the last one at the back, so that requires that sort of fearless attitude.“For 90 minutes, I focus on the game. I’m not trying to entertain anyone, but if that [deft skill] is what needs to be done, I do that. If we win the game, the supporters will be entertained, they will be happy anyway.“Some people might think that’s a risky thing to do as a defender, but sometimes a moment comes when you have to do a Cruyff-turn. It’s about doing the right thing in that moment. You make those decisions in a split second.”– Caglar SoyuncuRead at Leicester Mercury, interview via: The Times"
