Leicester’s midfield three as good as any other trio – Graeme Souness

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has hailed Leicester City’s midfield three of Youri Tielemans, Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison. He believes they’re as good a trio as any in football.

Unfortunately for Leicester City and the loyal faithful, the Foxes’ eight-match successive Premier League winning streak came to an end on Saturday. Norwich City went to King Power Stadium with a strong will not to be defeated by a rampant East Midlands side.

With an attacking, passing philosophy, the Canaries did a wonderful job of stifling and suppressing Brendan Rodgers’ team. When Leicester built more and more forward moves in the second half – as the Foxes usually do these days – Daniel Farke’s outfit were well-drilled and organized.

A share of the points was obviously better than the run of victories coming to an end with defeat. Though Rodgers and his players seemed disappointed after the game.

Leicester City’s best XI

In the previous two fixtures, the draw versus the Norfolk club and a 4-1 demolition of Aston Villa at Villa Park, Rodgers tinkered with his triumphant line-up.

The 4-3-3 formation was ditched for a 4-4-1-1 diamond set-up essentially. With Jamie Vardy and man of the moment, Kelechi Iheanacho, as a striking duo. However, Iheanacho was withdrawn first-half for a return to the former layout.

Sadly the system change didn’t garner the positive result it did at Villa when used against Norwich. In fact, the Northern Irishman’s team failed to breakdown their opponents and looked devoid of ideas for large periods. Maybe fatigue has set in slightly, following a run which has again earned worldwide recognition for Leicester.

Souness on Leicester

When Leicester’s victory over Villa concluded last weekend, opinionated and vastly experienced pundit Graeme Souness opined that there is no other midfield trio better than Leicester’s globally. Foxes of Leicester thinks the pundit is absolutely correct – Youri Tielemans, Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison are world-class.

This nod is also relevant to the recent alteration in formation. Basically the Foxes should revert to the 4-3-3, in our honest opinion. Dennis Praet hasn’t done a bad job since coming in; yet he should be replaced by Ayoze Perez, Demarai Gray or possibly the out-of-form Harvey Barnes to add width.

Here’s what the Liverpool great said on Sky Sports Super Sunday about the three:

"“I would suggest that Tielemans, Ndidi and Maddison, those three in midfield are as good as any out there. They really are; I thought the blend of them, you know, the hard work, the clever passing of Ndidi and Tielemans. And Maddison, I think he’s a real craftsman. I’ve said it’s not any interest to me of course [as a Scotsman], he should be a regular in the England team.”– Graeme Souness"
