Demarai Gray talks being snubbed at Leicester City
Demarai Gray has opened up on his evident back-up role for Leicester City. Although the winger also explains how Brendan Rodgers’ snub helped.
In a backhanded compliment, this writer describes Leicester City winger Demarai Gray as the most frustrating player at the King Power club. This is due to having divine, incredible natural talents and ability – but failing to reach consistent heights of achievement or performance.
The former Birmingham City wideman has undoubtedly got great prospects; he played for England youth and Under-21s, so pedigree is not debatable. Gray’s only issues seem to be focus and desire, as Foxes of Leicester have said many times.
His best position is on the wing or as an auxiliary striker; where he often plays and hasn’t always showcased his best. Therefore a suitable place in this team’s system is not a problem, either.
Gray under Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City
At age-23 with the skill set the Birmingham-born forward possesses, he would have expected to be a main starter for the Foxes by now. When current Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers began his first full campaign in charge on Filbert Way, however, Gray was not even named in the squad for the initial matches of the season.
Those games versus Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as the Chelsea visit, ended in draws – rather disappointingly for wishful thinking Foxes. It was of course clear that forward-thinking flair was absent. Hence Gray’s now very impactful appearances since from the bench.
Consequently the Young Lion has now divulged his feelings on the snub he received. Additionally he thanked his gaffer, Rodgers, for giving him the incentive to succeed:
"“I think it was the best thing he could have done for me. It made me knuckle down even more and focus on improving in every training session.“The manager said that he wants more from me in general. Football is about mentality and I’m feeling good, training well and every time I come into training I just want to be the best player.“It was obviously tough to take at the start of the season because I want to play football and be involved with the boys, but I just had to make sure I reacted to it and I feel like it’s made me stronger and hungrier.”– Demarai GrayVia: Leicester Mercury"
